What is Stormwater?

Stormwater is water that originates from precipitation, including not only rain, but snow and hail as well. This water collects on the grass and pavement and eventually finds its way to a body of water or a drain. During its travel, stormwater will pick up chemicals from fuel and salt on the road, in addition to common yard practices of fertilizer and weed killer use. The federal government has tasked each state, and therefore county and township, to control just how much of these substances enter our environment and lower the levels as much as possible.

We Meet Monthly

The Swatara Stormwater Authority meets the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM, both in person and streamed on our Township Facebook page. But, what is the annual Stormwater Fee used for? Our storm system is older and degrading throughout the Township. The original infrastructure relied on metal pipes and brick boxes, great for their time, but falling apart now. Pipe bottoms have rotted out over time, disintegration quickened by the use of salt in the winter, and bricks weather away. We find forgotten/abandoned, sediment and debris blocked structures, sinkholes from our karst (a fancy term for limestone and cave forming geology), and even animal activity. New construction uses plastic pipes, customized concrete boxes, improved detention/retention technology, as well as public education all lead to longer lasting system and better maintenance.
